Andrew Johnston

Andrew Johnston is an MA candidate in the Center for Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies at the University of Texas at Austin (Austin, TX, USA).

Andrew comes to CISR as an intern attached to the American Councils Overseas Russian Flagship Program housed at St. Petersburg State University's Russian Language and Culture Institute. In this capacity, Andrew will be assisting CISR with translation, copyediting and library cataloging. He will be at CISR through the end of May 2011.

His research interests and areas of specialization include Russian Foreign Policy; ethno-political conflict in the Caucasus; Conflict Management; 'hard power' and 'soft power' in International Relations; and Russia-Georgia relations. Andrew is writing his MA thesis about Russian use of hard and soft power in its bilateral relationship with the Georgian breakaway republic of Abkhazia from 1999-2009.

Andrew received his BA from the University of Texas at Austin in 2008 with a triple major in History, Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies, and Russian Language and Culture.
