Producting the Lesbian Body in Modern Lesbian Discourse
(2004)

Within the project there was an attempt to discover how the lesbian body is being produced in a predominately heterosexual world by lesbian women themselves; what image is produced and what meanings it is endowed with. The research examined why the body has such significance in the modern world and described basic methods of body investigation as well as the problems of producing the female and lesbian body. By analysing texts on one of the largest lesbian Internet-portals, four "lesbian bodies" - the health body, sex body, style body and love body - were isolated.

Use of Space by Village People (Local Inhabitants and Summer Residents):
Cats and Women in the Village

(2003-2004)

Within the project differences in the use of village space were studied in the context of their connection to the social positions of inhabitants and summer resident groups. Special attention was paid to the gender aspect of the use of village space. The research consisted of unstructured interviews and participant observation.

A "Pedagogical Poem" in Military Camouflage:
The "Son-of-Regiment" Institution

(2002-2004)

The goal of the project was to analyse the "son of regiment" phenomenon institutionalised in the system of military-patriotic education and the reproduction of military staff (using the cadets of a military unit of the Leningrad military district as an example). The research used qualitative methodology (conversations, observation, and interviews). The tasks of the research were as follows: to examine the nature of military-patriotic education in the contemporary army, to describe the everyday practices of cadets, to reveal the problems of social adaptation of cadets who were social orphans, and to analyse mass media discourse on the revival of the "son of regiment" institution.

ThešInfluence of thešArmy on Gender Socialization
(2001-2002)

Joint project with thešUniversity of Bremen (Germany).
Coordinator: Christine Eifler (Centre for Feminist Studies, University of Bremen).
Thešproject looked at thešinfluence of service in thešarmy on gender socialization, social construction of gender identities in thešarmy and thešanalysis of mass-media discourse. Within thešframework of thešproject, 20 leitmotiv interviews with women who served in thešArmy of thešRussian Federation were conducted.

Elderly Women - Expenditures and Incomes
(2000-2002)

Thešproject explored thešdaily housekeeping of single elderly women. Thešgoal of thešresearch was to analyze how these people, living alone, "make ends meet" with their low pensions and thešdepreciation of their savings as ašresult of inflation, and what resources they use. Thešmethods used in thešresearch: budget monitoring and focused interviews regarding resource management and modes of survival.

Sexual Culture of Contemporary Teenagers
(2000-2001)

Within thešframework of thešproject, interviews with schoolboys and schoolgirls who were visitors of thešorganization "Juventa" were conducted based on thešguidelines developed by thešpost-graduate student of thešHelsinki University L.šIhamaki. "Juventa" is ašconsulting and medical institution involved in thešproblems of sexuality and inter-sexual relationship. Thešobject of thešresearch was sexual culture of adolescents, practices of sexual relationships, attitude to contraception, homosexuality, safe sex etc.

Formation of Sexual Culture in Russia
(1996-1998)

Coordinator: Elina Haavio-Mannila (University of Helsinki).
Thešaim of thešproject was to explore thešfactors that influence thešformation of sexual culture in Russia. Eighteen interviews with men belonging to different generations were taken. Special attention was paid to sexual education, sexual practices and informants' attitudes towards contraception and sexual risk. Changes in sexual culture for thešlast ten years, as well as ašvariety of sexual practices, expectations and norms adopted in different generations, were studied.

35 biographical interviews with teachers and psychologists in St.šPetersburg, which focused on child-rearing practices and conceptions, as well as migrations, were taken as part of this project.

Thešresearch focused on thešsocial construction of women's sexuality in contemporary Russia. Middle class women with higher educations from three generations became target groups of thešstudy. In-depth biographical interviews on sexuality with 25šwomen and 3šmen were taken.
